WELCOME!

Dear parents,
My name is Ella Reava. I will be your student's English teacher. I am dedicated about your child's success and will be there to help support your child any way I can. I will be having your child read many works of literature, writing and challenging the world around them. For a idea of what type of I books I may be bringing into the classroom, check out my students page. I want your child to learn to strive for academic and personal greatness. This is something your child will not have to do alone. You, as a parent, get to be involved in their success. Whether that means you get them to school or you challenge what they learned in class or you tell them to do their homework or work with me to make sure that they're doing well inside and outside the classroom. Here is a link to the National Education Association, where you can learn more about how to be involved in your child's education.
Some background on me. I am going to Western Michigan University for Secondary Education English and minoring in History. I have every intent to introduce historical topics in the classroom. Personally, it is my belief that history in schools have been whitewashed, censored or simply removed, turning it into a untruthful picture of the world and America's role in it. I want to introduce literature that explores parts of history that has been removed from your child's classrooms. I also intend to teach literature with LGBTQ+ storylines as it is my belief that the more students are exposed to stories that may not look like theirs, it teaches them empathy and gives them a perspective they may have otherwise never thought of. I do know that with coming to study such literature, some students might find themselves finding themselves relating to LGBT characters and that's okay. If you want to know more about what this may mean, check out PFLAG, a website helpful for parents of students questioning their orientation.
My classroom is a open and safe space where students can air out problems and ask questions without fear of judgement. Education isn't just about getting the best grades, getting into the best schools. It's more than that. Education is learning about the world through not just their perspective, but others too. It's about setting an example, helping them develop as a human being. Not just making them "smart" but making them into upstanding people. However, I do understand the importance of going to college and what that means for students as well as their families. I will do everything in my power to help your student succeed and go to college. As such, the financial side of college is daunting, so here is a link to College Savings. It's a webpage that will help you plan out how to pay your child's college expenses.

My Philosophy
Students are the future. As a teacher, it's our job to nurture, grow and develop our student's minds. We nurture their minds by giving our students opportunities to sit down and read. To give them a moment's escape from reality. We help our students grow by giving them intellectually stimulating novels to read as a class. To bounce ideas and theories off of each other. To work together to discover and understand what the book may be telling them. We develop our students' minds by challenging them to think harder and dig deeper. To ask questions. English is a subject that calls for constant participation, whether that's physically, intellectually or emotionally. It's a subject that demonstrates empathy.
As a history minor, I am biased. That said, Historical fiction is a valuable genre with the unique ability to reveal hidden truths. Historical fiction helps students understand how the world has come to function the way it does. It grasps a student's interest in subjects otherwise categorized as boring. Historical fiction helps students look into and understand minds almost lost to time, to see the world through different lenses, to discover the human condition. Teaching students about our failures and our wins will help students strive to break the mold set on them by past generations. To help them recognize when it's time to stand firm, unwavering and when it's time to be a wrecking ball.
Without education, growth is stunted. Our job is to open student's minds and hearts to the world.
