HISTORICAL FICTION (WWII)
Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith is a story about strength and determination in the face of discrimination. This is the story of Ida Mae and her journey to becoming a W.A.S.P. The trials Ida faces between her life at home and abroad. What it means to pass and how that affects her family, her dream and ultimately, her identity. This novel holds many truths about life. Amazing read.
“I wish the army had taught us how to navigate feelings as easily as they did a starless night sky.” “If you're colored, you get the short end of the stick. If you're a woman, you get the short end of the stick. So what do we get for being colored and women?” |
POETIC AUTOBIOGRAPHYA story of Jacqueline, following her life through her eyes. Words flow from one page to the next and sweeps you off your feet. Her words are powerful, her ability to transition from angst to happiness to sadness leaves readers on a emotional rollercoaster. Despite my dislike of poetry, this novel pulled me in and kept me turning the pages.

Dystopian Sci fiChildren of World Leaders are held captive in order to keep the peace between all their nations. This book is thought-provoking, brings up interesting topics. Excellent book to read as a group and discuss! It's humorous, got romance and action, so this book won't leave students bored to death. A bonus, this novel has LGBT+ representation!
“...and of course people started shooting, because that’s what passes for problem-solving among humans. See, guys, this is why you can’t have nice things.” |
HISTORICAL FICTION(WWII--WHAT IF)This novel follows the journey of Rio--who is fighting on the front lines, Rainy---who is training to be part of an elite intelligence unit and Frangie--who is training to be a medic. Their individual journeys lead them to each other, making for this novel a thrilling read, begging to see what will happen next at each turn of the page. An excellent read if a fan of historical fiction, specifically WWII or looking for a book riddled with adventure. Personally, read this book curled up on my couch with a hot tea. Did not leave my spot for hours.
“Only Jack has remarked on the irony that America is going to war against a white supremacist enemy with a segregated American army.” “Will you understand if I tell you that there are times when it is better to feel the pain yourself than to see it and hear it in another?” |
Dystopian Sci-FiYa'll, Brave New World is a favorite of mine. A thought-provoking, quotable piece of literature. Each time I read this novel, I find new details I missed. This novel is much like an onion. It's got a layer, then you bite into it and oh, what is that? Another layer. Bite again. New layer! This novel explores a world devoid of monogamous connection and focuses on conditioning human beings to become something or someone that they're not. This novel explores humanity and is deeply intriguing. It's an older read, but this one is a goody.
“Words can be like X-rays if you use them properly -- they’ll go through anything. You read and you’re pierced.” |
